Typically, the phrase “contract furniture” doesn’t conjure up iconic images pertinent to the evolution of Modern design. But that’s only owing to a lack of imagination, since some of the 20th. century’s most renowned designers dealt with the varied demands of the workspace. Case in point: Denmark’s Hans Wegner, whose CH 110 Desk helped set the tone for the modern workplace.

Originally released in 1962, the CH 110 desk captured the spirit of the age. Featuring an unusually spacious yet enviably thin worktop and stainless steel legs, CH 110 is imbued with the Modern Scandinavian aesthetic: the desk’s skillful synthesis of straight-lined minimalist geometry and subtle, functional details made the piece an instant classic.

Many thanks to the efforts of manufacturer Carl Hansen & Son—the original licensee of the design—Wegner’s CH 110 is now available to the latest generation of A&D aficionados. Continuing a collaboration begun in 1949, when Carl Hansen released Wegner’s CH 22-25 series chairs, the manufacturer recently re-launched the CH 110.

This re-issue couldn’t be more timely. In addition to its slim, flawless design and  enduring aesthetic, the CH 110 embraces the new ethos of saving space and minimizing clutter. The piece’s limited drawer space will appeal to all those—like yours truly—who endeavor to keep office accessories down to a bare minimum. And the desk’s prodigious amount of negative space gives it an airy, open feel.

Options for CH 110 include a choice of oiled or lacquered oak or walnut worktop. The flawlessly dovetailed joints of the slim drawers highlight Wegner’s expert craftsmanship, and the stainless steel lock plate is an eye-catching detail.
